Darker than Black
#1
This is going to be a bit long for those of you who are unfamiliar with DTB, but if you want to play I don't want you to be clueless. So if you are really interested, read this. If not, skimming is optional, but I DO want you to know that if you make an incorrect post I will correct you. I really just need you guys to know who is who, and what is what. Not who is what, and what is who. And besides, if I have to keep correcting you, it'll get very... annoying. And you won't like me. o.o

Darker than Black is based in the not so distant future (could very well be a distant version of “now”) where with the appearance of “Heaven's Gate” in South America and “Hell's Gate” in Tokyo the regular sky has disappeared. The moon is gone, and the stars are all fake. These new stars each represent a single Contractor, and when that Contractor uses his power, the star he corresponds to vibrates, and when he dies, the star becomes a shooting star and disappears.

Some terminology I need you all to remember, and if not, at least to refer to here:

Hell's Gate (地獄門, Heruzu Gēto)
A strange area of space that appeared in Tokyo, Japan, along with a twin, Heaven's Gate Heaven's Gate (天国門, Hevunzu Gēto) in South America. A wall has been built around Hell's Gate to prevent anyone from entering, and countries including Japan and England are researching what's inside it. It is said that Contractors who go near the gate can lose control if they aren't strong enough. It's South American Twin disappeared 5 years before the start of the main story plot, and no one can reach it. This is where the start of the “war” between Humans and Contractors originated.

PANDORA (Physicalquantity Alternation Natural Deconstruction Organized Research Agency)
A research organization that is dedicated to the research and understanding of Hell's Gate and all phenomena therein. Operated by the United Nations, the facility is located next to the entrance into Hell's Gate, and conducts it's research via expeditions (manned and unmanned) into Hell's Gate, where it is said that paranormal phenomena such as ghosts is not uncommon to see. It is not impervious to various intelligence agencies despite being an international organization, and spies are able to enter any level if they are clever enough to get past security, but PANDORA is heavily armed with armed soldiers and armored vehicles specifically to deal with both Humans and Contractors.

Contractor (契約者, Keiyakusha)
An individual who gained superhuman powers due to the appearance of the Gates. The general public is kept in the dark about their existance, but they are well known to exist by certain organizations (such as PANDORA and police departments) as well as members of the criminal underworld. In order to use their powers, Contractors must pay a price after, thus the name (Contractor). This price, or “remuneration” (対価, Taika ), is often bizarre, and MUST be performed. Payment can be delayed, but it is often times difficult on the Contractor, who canot choose what it is s/he has to do, and it grows in strength the greater the power that is used (for example, a Contractor who uses his power for a few quick seconds might have to only eat 1 egg, whereas if he performed it for combat that took a few hours, he might have to eat four or five of them). Here are a few known examples of a Contractor's remuneration:
  • Arranging pebbles
Alteration of age, swiftly growing older or younger
Drinking various fluids, including hot milk, beer, and the blood of children
Earmarking the pages of a book
Eating various foods, including boiled eggs and flowers
    Intaking and regurgitating objects
    Kissing someone
Placing the shoes of the victim upside down on the ground
Regaining human feelings for a brief time
Self-mutilation or injury, including dislocating fingers and wrist-slitting
    Singing a song
    Sleeping
    Smoking
    Writing poetry

Contractors are often feared because of their apparent lack of emotion, and many assume that they simply do not have them. This is untrue, however. While Contractors DO have emotions, the feelings do not play an important role in their thought process. Thus, Contractors make rational, logical decisions and in essence, only care about themselves. Contractors also have a hard time making any significant relationships with others, partly because they feel no guilt for their actions (despite being able to feel emotions), however bad, and that the emotions they feel are often kept inside rather than expressed.

Doll (ドール, Dōru)

Emotionless mediums, these beings can perform a variety of tasks, the most common of which is sending an observer spirit to spy on another using an element (such as water or earth), as long as said person is near the element. Yin, a Doll in the main series, uses water to spy on others and watch out for the members of her team. She can see anything happening anywhere she wants to, providing there is water. Dolls can also be “programmed” with memories and personalities, becoming the perfect sleeper agent until the time is just right. Dolls are not supposed to do anything they aren't told to do, but there is evidence to suggest that they can act according to their own will and personality, even if only slightly.

Moratorium (モラトリアム, Moratoriamu)

An intermediate between a Contractor and a Doll. Moratoria are basically Contractors who do not have to pay a remuneration, but unlike full Contractors, they cannot control their abilities, shifting into a hypnotic state of unconsciousness as they use them. Moratoria also suffer from severe mental trauma as a result of their power. The chance of a Moratorium morphing into a Contractor is near zero, but possible.

Regressor (喪失者, Sōshitsusha)
A Contractor who loses their powers in exchange for a flicker of hope for a normal life. There are very few known Regressors, and the way one becomes a Regressor is also unknown, although returning to a normal Human being is not guaranteed. For example, Mao (A contractor with the ability to possess animals) tried to regain a normal life and somehow lost his body (along with his renumeration) but because he was still able to use his ability, he survived by possessing the body of a black cat.

Weapons
Weapons can be used to enhance a Contractor's abilities. For example, if you can produce electricity, you need something to get it to your opponent, because that is the nature of electricity... No one throws lightning bolts. So, using a metallic wire and blade not only gives you a wide range for the blade, but a conductor for the electricity as well.

So, the story behind the RPG: If you read anything up there (^------ xD) then you would know that Contractors are not publicly known. A group of rebel Contractors wants otherwise, and will do anything to get known, feeling that they deserve equal rights as humans. PANDORA and the Tokyo police (yes, it takes place next to Hell's Gate) do not want this to happen, and will do anything to PREVENT this from happening, fearing the public may panic. We start off in a Tokyo of the not so distant future.

So, here is the sign up sheet for the story, enjoy:
